A New York Holiday

Printing Christmas in the Nineteenth Century

Location
Swem Lobby Exhibit Case
Duration
-
Illustration of Santa Claus on a camel holding an umbrella, with children and gifts around.

Exhibiting Nancy H. Marshall’s extensive collection of Clement C. Moore’s “A Visit from St. Nicholas” and other Christmas narratives is a yearly tradition at Swem Library. This year’s exhibit considers the changing role of Christmas symbolism, including Moore’s poem, within the developing New York City publishing scene during the nineteenth century. Throughout this century, the New York media’s representation of Christmas evolved from portraying local celebrations to marketing to an international audience.
