CHIN 180: Chinese Calligraphy
Instructor: Le Mai
This course on the art and practice of Chinese calligraphy and painting consists of an introduction to the history, principle and aesthetic values of Chinese characters and calligraphy and offers hands-on experience on brush composition. It also covers the connections between calligraphy, painting, poetry and philosophical thoughts, namely Taoism (yin and yang), Confucianism, and Buddhism. Students are required to finish five projects over the course of the semester, including a bamboo painting, an orchid painting, calligraphy of Chinese proverbs and poetry, and a final project that combines calligraphy and painting.
