Iria Giuffrida

Iria Giuffrida is the Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs & Development at William & Mary, where she leads university-wide initiatives that support faculty development, engagement, and well-being across all career stages. In this role, she works closely with faculty leadership and campus partners to advance strategic priorities related to faculty recruitment, retention, mentoring, and professional growth. She also oversees key academic programs, including the coordination of faculty awards and fellowships, and serves as a liaison to the Faculty Assembly. She supports the ongoing review and communication of Faculty Handbook policies in coordination with the Office of the Provost and the Faculty Assembly, and helps address faculty questions related to those policies.

She continues to serve as a Professor of the Practice of Law at William & Mary Law School. Prior to her current appointment, she was Assistant Dean for Academic & Faculty Affairs, with responsibilities spanning adjunct faculty relations and the academic components of the Law School’s online and executive education programs. She also served as Interim Director of the LL.M. Programs and Deputy Director of the Center for Legal & Court Technology.

Professor Giuffrida’s research focuses on the legal and policy issues surrounding artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and related emerging technologies. She engages in interdisciplinary scholarship and frequently collaborates with faculty across the Schools and the College of Arts & Sciences. Her work is also connected to grant-funded initiatives supporting diversity in the cybersecurity workforce and broader technology-related research.

She teaches the Law School’s innovative course on artificial intelligence, one of the first of its kind offered nationwide. Her teaching portfolio includes International Business Transactions, International Commercial Arbitration, and Mediation. She has also taught business law courses at the Raymond A. Mason School of Business and co-taught an interdisciplinary seminar on cyber and information security in collaboration with a colleague from the Business School.

Before entering academia, Professor Giuffrida was a commercial litigator in the London and Brussels offices of Dechert LLP and at Enyo Law LLP, where she handled complex, multijurisdictional disputes and alternative dispute resolution matters. She has advised on competition law, joint venture disputes, energy and construction law, financial services litigation, and fiduciary duties.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) from Queen Mary University of London and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from William & Mary. She is admitted to practice law in New York, is a Solicitor in England and Wales, and in the Republic of Ireland. She is also a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US). Earlier in her career, she taught law in both the United Kingdom and the United States and worked for the European Ombudsman in Brussels.
