The Botetourt Gallery, located on the ground floor of Swem Library, is a study space and exhibit space. It features a variety of furniture such as high top tables, sofas and chairs.
The gallery is named after the statue that graces the space -- the original 1773 Lord Botetourt Statue. Norborne Berkeley, 4th Baron Botetourt (c. 1717 – 1770) served as the governor of Virginia from 1768 to 1770, when he died in office. While serving as rector at William & Mary, Berkeley endowed the creation of the Botetourt Medal, an award to incentivize student scholarship. After his death, the Virginia General Assembly commissioned Richard Hayward to produce Lord Botetourt, a marble statue depicting Berkeley that stood in the Capitol in Williamsburg. The original survives in Swem Library, while a replica stands in front of the univesity's Wren Building.
The lower level of the gallery is not wheelchair accessible.
