As the academic year comes to an end, we’d like to recognize and celebrate our graduating student employees.

Your dedication and work help make W&M Libraries an inviting space for learning and community.

Student employees are vital to the day-to-day functioning of the libraries. They hold down the fort at our public service desks, catalog and shelf materials in the stacks, digitize materials from Special Collections, help patrons check out and use media equipment, design exhibits, and appear on our social media.

We are extremely grateful to have these students be a part of the library team. While we are sad to see you go, we are cheering you on as you enter a new phase of life.

Each year, graduating students choose a book to add to our collection. All the graduating students’ book selections will be on display during the month of May in the lobby of Swem Library. Read some of the student’s selections and why they chose them below.

"Hello Stranger" by Katherine Center

This book tackles multiple themes including health conditions, family troubles, and being true to yourself in the face of adversity in a very heartfelt tone. I found this book to be a great reminder to change my perspective if things are going the way an anticipate them to.

"Where the Mountains Meet the Moon" by Grace Lin

I scoured my local library as a kid, searching for myself within those pages. Grace Lin provided that rare and much-needed heroine in Minli, her ten-year-old protagonist who loves to sit and listen to stories from her father. It's a really sweet book that I hope brings a lot of joy to anyone who chooses to peruse Swem's fable collection.

"Fleabag: The Scriptures" by Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Fleabag has been one of the greatest influences on my work as a screenwriter, and it seemed only fitting to honor 4 years at the Media Center with a book of scripts!

"Novice to Master: An Ongoing Lesson in the Extent of My Own Stupidity" by Soko Morinaga

I was intrigued by this Zen monk's journey to relearn everything he thought he knew when he was at his lowest. It made me consider the self, what matters most to me, and what I want my impact on the world to be.

"Hyperion" by Dan Simmons

This book remains one of my favorite sci-fi novels and encapsulates how multi-faceted and applicable the genre can be.

"On Freedom" by Timothy Snyder

"On Freedom" by Timothy Snyder is a powerful reflection on the responsibilities that come with liberty. I chose this book to be purchased in my honor because it challenges people who read it to think critically about democracy, truth, and individual actions and thinking in shaping a just society. In an era where freedom is often taken for granted or threatened, Snyder’s insights serve as a vital reminder that it must actively be defended.

"Everything I Know About Love" by Dolly Alderton

Dolly Alderton's book tells a very personal story about her life experiences in a way that so many girls and woman can relate to. I loved this book - I really want other student to be able to read it from the library at W&M. Thank you!!
