ScholarWorks moves to a new platform

ScholarWorks content migrated to a new platform, Open Repository, in June. The migration required us to simplify the collections in ScholarWorks, and the way our previous platform reconciled author names and subjects differs from our new system.

Recognizing these issues, we are actively working on post-migration data remediation. This mediation phase will run through December 2025 during this time we are prioritizing access. Please note some changes require multiple updates to enact and are done in a progressive approach. The expected timeline is listed below.

July:

  • All DOIs redirect appropriately

August:

  • Historic usage statistics will be available
  • Large datasets hosted off-site will be fully accessible
  • All journals will be hosted on our new platform journal.libraries.wm.edu
  • Current collection level URL redirects will be active

September:

  • Department/School level filtering will be available for Theses & Dissertations
  • Ingest forms for Honors Theses and Geology Capstones will be completed
  • Revised classification scheme identified to update collections and sub-collections

October:

  • Community and Collection level organization will be completed

November:

  • Author name variations reconciled into single format
  • Interdisciplinary items will appear in all associated collection/sub-collection

December:

  • Finalize remaining metadata review and updates

What this Means for You:

While we designed the migration process to minimize disruptions in your research workflows, we recognize technical issues may arise and you might encounter some issues. If you encounter any issues (missing content, broken links, etc), or if you have content to deposit into ScholarWorks, please contact scholarworks@wm.edu.

Benefits of our New Platform & Good News!

Migrating ScholarWorks to Open Repository has many benefits we’re excited to share with our users.

  • We can standardize how content is added to the repository, have more flexibility with the types of files we can ingest, and can add different types of files to a single record. These improved features will make it easier for your research to be accessed.
  • Archiving datasets is easier with a streamlined process that will improve turn-around times.
  • We can integrate author ORCiDs to content in ScholarWorks.
  • We can create researcher profiles which will provide you with a single landing page for your work.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we enhance W&M ScholarWorks institutional repository services.
