What is Open Education and why does W&M Libraries support it?
Open Education uses resources (OER), tools and practices that are free of legal, financial and technical barriers and can be fully used, shared and adapted digitally. Open Education strives to make education more affordable, accessible and effective.
William & Mary Libraries invests in open education because our mission is to support and enhance teaching and research as well as to foster intellectual curiosity, creativity and lifelong learning.
How we support Open Education and Open Access:
- Resources for publishing in Open Access journals
- Open Access databases
- OpenStax textbooks
- VIVA discounts on article publication charges (APCs) for OA journals
- VIVA Open Grants
- VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal
- List of open education resources and alternatives for courses
Find or create OER for your course
We can help faculty interested in supporting open education by adopting open educational resources. These free, online materials increase student access to course materials by providing accessible and affordable options. Refer to our list of Open Education resources for finding textbooks as well as alternative options to help lower the cost of course materials.
In addition to the resources available through the VIVA Faculty Textbook Portal, OpenStax, and Open Access databases listed above, the library can walk you through authoring your own OER. If you have already created OERs, whether slidedecks, handouts, etc, consider placing them in W&M ScholarWorks so students and faculty everywhere can benefit from them.
