Swem Library has set a new record for the greatest number of alumni donors ever, with more than 800 alumni giving to Swem in fiscal year 2011, which ended June 30. Not only does the new record demonstrate the robust commitment of William & Mary alumni to the library, but this achievement also reflects the tireless efforts of Swem Library's Board of Directors and the library staff. According to Interim Dean of University Libraries Bea Hardy, this record is "of particular importance, because it illustrates the fantastic work of Swem's staff through the years in making Swem an exciting and inviting place for everyone who uses our many resources."
In the final push to break the record, both the curent and incoming board chairs rallied support. Audra Lalley, the outgoing board chair, observed, "It was important for me as outgoing chair to help Swem reach this important milestone. I am not surprised that Swem directors and staff were able to rally for record support. We like to call Swem "the History and the Future of the College, right at the heart of campus." Expanding on Audra's comments the incoming chair, Bee McLeod, maintained the importance of this achievement, noting that this record reflected "the board's active role in supporting the many goals of the library."
Finally, Karlene Jennings, Senior Director of Development for Swem Library, emphasized that reaching this goal is doubly important because it "shows the value of Swem Library to alumni while providing our incoming dean, Carrie Cooper, a long list of allies as she begins shaping Swem's future."
Thank you to all alumni--and all Swem donors--who helped make this one of the best years in library giving. Swem looks forward to next year!
