Award-winning actress Glenn Close and her biotech entrepreneur husband, David Shaw, are this year’s recipients of the university’s Cheek Medal Award. The Cheek Medal is a national arts award given by William & Mary to those who have contributed significantly to the field of museum, performing or visual arts. In honor of Close, Swem Library is hosting a free Glenn Close Film Festival in the library’s Botetourt Theater, ground floor. No tickets are needed. Seats are first-come, first-served.
Schedule is as follows:
Monday, Sept. 16: “Dangerous Liaisons” – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. (Swem Library will be showcasing items from Glenn Close’s personal papers between 5:30-7 p.m. in the Botetourt Gallery, ground floor.)
Wednesday, Sept. 18: “The Natural” – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Saturday, Sept. 21: “101 Dalmatians” – 2 p.m. (Kid friendly!)
Monday, Sept. 23: “Fatal Attraction” – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Sept. 25: “Albert Nobbs” – 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.
A new exhibit at Swem Library also explores Close’s time at the college and the lasting connections she formed here. “Close Connections: Glenn Close’s ties to the William & Mary community” features class notebooks, letters from fellow William & Mary production cast members, and other items from Close’s personal papers housed in Swem’s Special Collections Research Center. The exhibit will be on display in the library’s Marshall Gallery, first floor, through January 15.
