Swem Library has added a number of new electronic resources to better serve your teaching and research needs!
Two exciting additions to our databases are NBC Learn Higher Ed and NBC Learn K-12, which allow you to access thousands of videos from NBC News dating back to the 1920s! NBC Learn Higher Ed features historic news reports, primary source documents, video coverage of current events and original series that can be used in research and teaching. NBC Learn K-12 is a similar database of K-12 appropriate resources aligned to the Virginia Standards of Learning.
Through these databases you can hear the speeches, watch the events and witness the greatest moments, as they were recorded by NBC News cameras. You can also watch award-winning original video series like “Finishing the Dream: Learning from the Civil Rights Era” and “Science of NFL Football.” NBC Learn’s CueCard media player makes downloading, annotating, citing and embedding videos easy. Videos and playlists can be shared via email, links or social media platforms. NBC Learn is also accessible through Blackboard. A one-year subscription to this service is courtesy of Colonial Academic Alliance, a consortium of the 12 colleges and universities of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
Another addition to our databases is State Stats by CQ Press. This database provides comprehensive data for U.S. states including health care, crime and education. You'll find reliable, easy-to-use data from 80 sources covering more than 15 years. When you find data you're interested in, explore it using the mapping and graphing tools, compare it with other data sets or export it to Excel.
Swem is also benefiting from a new contract negotiated between ProQuest and the Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA), which now provides access to:
- Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography
- Literature Online (LION), containing over 357,250 works of literature, a vast compilation of criticism and reference, and the following collections: Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare, Bibliography of American Literature, The W. B. Yeats Collection and Twentieth-Century American Poetry.
Additionally, Swem Library currently has 14 databases on trial including EBSCO e-book Academic Collection, Britannica Image Quest, Merriam Webster Unabridged and American Indian Histories and Culture. We need your feedback on content, quality and ease of use. Help us choose which databases to purchase! Visit swem.wm.edu/databases/trials to test the databases & provide input on the feedback form.
