Swem Library welcomes Lee Van Orsdel, dean of University Libraries at Grand Valley State University, to campus Nov. 6-7 for several sessions on open access topics. Open access is the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need.
Van Orsdel is an elected member of the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition Steering Committee. Under her leadership, Grand Valley State University received the Excellence in Academic Libraries Award in 2012 by the Association of College and Research Libraries. In August, she opened the Mary Idema Pew Library, a $65 million facility that is architecturally stunning and thoughtfully designed to build commuity and further the academic mission of the institution.
Program schedule is as follows: (Please RSVP online if you plan to attend any (or all) of the events.)
Wednesday, Nov. 6
Scholarly Publishing: Economics, Open Access and Academic Culture
8:30-10 a.m.
Tidewater A, Sadler Center
Economic pressures and technology are making the way for fundamental changes in the way scholars create, evaluate and distribute their scholarship. These changes affect libraries, access to information, the promotion and tenure process and our visibility as a university. Spend a morning with colleagues learning and discussing how these issues impact the university’s aspirations and goals. Session is open to anyone - staff, faculty, students. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be provided.
Lunch and Learn: The Humanities and Open Access
12-2 p.m.
Ford Classroom, Swem Library
This session features faculty across the humanities, Provost Michael Halleran and other university administrators. The dialogue will explore how the OA movement is impacting research in the humanities, and consider ways in which scholars and publishers are responding, rethinking and reflecting. The conversation is perfectly timed as the university seeks to be a leader among liberal arts institutions, and the Omohundro Institute reflects on its responsibility as a leading humanities research organization. Session open to faculty and staff only. Lunch will be provided.
Thursday, November 7
The Engaged Librarian: Leading in a Changing Profession
8:30-11:30 a.m.
Tidewater A, Sadler Center
This session is focused on the changing role of librarians as a result of open access and the changes in academic publishing. It is open to librarians and library staff across William & Mary and beyond.
