As part of its community outreach mission, and to encourage local student filmmaking, the W&M Global Film Festival (GFF) is running its second annual "DIY/FIY" (Do-It-Young/Film-It-Yourself) Youth Filmmaking Project for area secondary and primary school filmmakers (grades 4-12). The project includes a pair of Saturday filmmaking workshops and follow-up mentoring support from W&M filmmaking students.
The first workshop was held Saturday, Nov. 2 at the Williamsburg Regional Library and covered the filmmaking production process. The second workshop, held Saturday, Nov. 9 at Swem Library's Media Center, focused on editing and the post-production process. In addition to the workshops, a team of mentors will also be available for follow-up support through the remainder of the W&M fall semester.
The DIY/FIY project also coincides with the launch of the 2014 W&M GFF Student Short Film Competition. The W&M GFF seeks submissions of short films (20 minutes or less) made by students of all ages. Selected films will be screened in competition as part of the 2014 W&M Global Film Festival held Feb. 13-16 at the historic Kimball Theatre. The competing films will be judged by a jury of guest filmmakers from around the world and will be eligible for prizes and awards.
