The James City County Board of Supervisors has appointed Kim Sims, William & Mary’s university archivist, to the James City County Historical Commission. The commission is responsible for documenting, preserving and promoting the historical heritage of James City County.
“The Historical Commission of James City County will benefit greatly from the professional training and background of Kim Sims. We are indeed fortunate that she is willing to volunteer her time in helping to promote and protect the rich history of our community,” said John McGlennon, James City County Board of Supervisors member.
Kim Sims has served as the university archivist at W&M’s Swem Library since July 2014. She came to W&M from Duke University where she served as technical services archivist for the Rubenstein Rare Book and Manuscript Library.
“Something that struck me pretty soon after I started working at William & Mary was how many colleagues across campus participate in civic engagement. When the commission announced it was looking for applicants to fill vacant positions, I knew immediately that this was my opportunity to do the same in a way that appealed to me both personally and professionally,” Sims said.
Future priorities for the commission include restoration of the Norge Depot, creation of a Norge oral history program, and nomination of the Norge Depot and Toano area to the National Register. The commission also has many ongoing projects such as creating educational exhibits on county history and collecting materials pertaining to the county’s past.
